The cone penetrometer is the simplest and most portable static cone penetration tester. The penetration resistance required to statically push the tip cone into the soil by human force is measured by the probing ring to obtain the approximate values of the relative strength, adhesion, uniaxial compressive strength and allowable ground bearing capacity of cohesive soil.
Soft ground, mainly soft clay, silt, or peat, is best, and is useful for quickly measuring the approximate cohesion and depth of cohesive soil to get an overview of the ground profile.
